Diamonds are sold on four properties that every grader uses and every buyer should understand. Learn the 4Cs and a showroom stops being intimidating — you can compare two stones on paper instead of by whichever catches the light better under the shop's spotlights.
Cut: the one that makes it sparkle
Cut is how precisely the diamond is shaped and polished, and it does more for brilliance than anything else. A well-cut stone of modest colour and clarity can outshine a larger, poorly cut one. If you prioritise a single C, make it this.
Colour: graded by its absence
Diamond colour runs from D (completely colourless) down through the alphabet as a faint yellow tint appears. The near-colourless range (G–J) offers the best balance of looks and value for most buyers.
Clarity: the flaws you cannot see
Clarity grades internal marks (inclusions). Many stones graded VS or SI look flawless to the eye — \"eye-clean\" — while costing far less than the top grades. You rarely need to pay for perfection a magnifier reveals and your eye never will.
Carat: weight, not size alone
Carat is weight. Prices jump at round numbers like 1.00ct, so a 0.90ct stone can look almost identical for noticeably less. Shape and cut affect how big a given carat looks.
The C that is not optional: the certificate
Buy only with an independent grading report from a recognised lab such as GIA or IGI. It states all 4Cs objectively, so you are comparing graded facts, not sales talk. In Dubai, reputable sellers provide it without being pushed.
