Once you move past jewellery into gold as a store of value, the question narrows to two shapes: bars and coins. Both are typically 999.9 pure, both are sold close to the live metal price, and both are easy to buy across Dubai. The differences are practical, not dramatic.
Bars: the lowest premium
Bars carry the smallest markup over the gold value, and the premium shrinks as the bar gets bigger. A 100g bar costs less per gram than ten 10g bars. Look for an accredited refiner stamp and a serial number; a sealed assay card helps at resale.
Coins: flexibility and recognition
Coins cost a little more per gram because of minting, but they buy you flexibility. Selling one coin is easier than cutting value out of a large bar, and well-known coins are instantly recognisable to any dealer, which can speed up a sale.
How to choose
- Storing a lump sum? Larger bars, lowest premium.
- Saving gradually or gifting? Small bars or coins you can sell one at a time.
- Want the easiest resale anywhere? Recognised coins.
Storage matters either way
Keep the refiner packaging and any assay certificate intact — scratched or unpackaged metal can attract extra checks at resale. Many UAE buyers use a bank locker or a home safe. Whatever you choose, the premium you paid is only worth it if the piece stays clean, sealed and verifiable.
