Ask the price of gold at 10am and again at 6pm and you may get two different numbers. That is not a shop playing games — it is the rate doing exactly what it should, following a global market that never sits still during trading hours.
The rate follows a live market
UAE retail prices are built from the international spot price of gold, which trades around the clock across major financial centres. While that market is open, the spot price moves constantly, and local boards update to keep pace.
What actually moves it
- The US dollar: gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar tends to push gold down and vice versa.
- Interest-rate expectations: gold pays no interest, so when rates are expected to rise, gold often softens; when cuts look likely, it tends to firm.
- Safe-haven demand: uncertainty and risk-off moods send money toward gold, lifting the price.
Why the dirham peg does not smooth it
The dirham is pegged to the dollar, so currency conversion is stable. But the underlying dollar gold price still moves, and that is what flows through to the board. The peg removes one source of noise, not the market itself.
What it means for timing a purchase
Intraday swings are usually small relative to the total cost of a piece, and no one reliably predicts them. If you are buying jewellery to keep, the making charge and the design matter far more than catching a perfect minute. For larger value purchases, watching the trend over days beats chasing the hour.
